Internet of Things (IoT): opportunities and challenges for the tourism industry
29-30 November 2018, Palma
At this 13th INTO Seminar we will again analyse one of the technologies that will give a clear competitive advantage to companies that manage to integrate it into their strategy so as to improve the traveller’s experience. The internet of things provides countless ways to interact with customers and get to know them better. It also helps simplify transactions, improve predictions and optimise resources. During the two-day seminar, we will analyse how introducing sensors linked to the internet in buildings, vehicles, household appliances, etc., will completely transform the tourist industry resulting in great opportunities and challenges.
For the past 12 editions, since the first INTO in 2004, a variety of themes related to tourism products have been analysed, such as culture, yachting and health, as well as marketing instruments like branding and the social media. We have also debated the new ways of addressing sustainability in the sector with major issues like climate change and seasonality. Likewise, we have examined issues related to the evolution in the technology used in the tourism industry in order to analyse tourist behaviour and use these new technological tools to create and/or transform tourist destinations sustainably.
In November, 29th and 30th 2018, representatives of public administrations, entrepreneurs, researchers, professors, students and professionals of different areas, among others, will meet to discuss and analyze the topic related to Internet of Things and its opportunities for the tourism industry. The aim of INTO Seminar is to foster the transfer of knowledge and promote innovation throughout the entire value chain in the tourism industry in order to improve the competitiveness of the Balearic Islands.

The emergence of new dynamics of relationship, management and leisure together with the idea of connection of things open the doors to a new development of objects that will enable the emergence of new ways of understanding the “products” giving them the value of communication. The review of uses and objects from the perspective of connected products opens a path for new business models. The technologies of communication, connectivity, micro-sensors, nano-directed developments, image management, the advance of batteries … make us glimpse an important area of development linked to the improvement and contribution of knowledge to traditional environments
